Junior High Winter Sports 2026-27 Update,
Beginning this school year, Wiley will be implementing a new pilot schedule for Junior High winter sports by splitting the season into two parts.
October – December : JH Boys Basketball JH Girls Wrestling
January – March : JH Girls Basketball JH Boys Wrestling
This change is designed to create a better experience for our student-athletes, families, coaches, and schools. Some of the benefits include:
Less missed classroom time for students
Later game start times and shorter evenings for families
The same number of contests for every team, just spread out differently
Opportunities to compete against the same schools, while adding additional opponents from across the valley
Help manage a practice space for both sports
Allows student-athletes to participate in multiple sports without overlapping seasons
Gives both basketball and wrestling the opportunity to have full, natural seasons instead of compressing wrestling into just a few weeks
Previously, Junior High basketball stretched from October through February, while wrestling was condensed into roughly three weeks. This new format gives every sport the time and attention it deserves while encouraging more students to participate in multiple activities.
While this is a pilot year for Wiley, we are not the first school to make this transition. We are joining several other schools throughout the valley that have already adopted this schedule with positive results.
We are excited to see how this new format benefits our student-athletes and look forward to a great winter sports season. Thank you for your continued support of Wiley Athletics!
